Sinequan is the trade name of a prescription drug containing Doxepin as the active component. Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant approved by the FDA. This medication is an FDA approved drug for the treatment of depression or anxiety in psychoneurotic patients, anxiety or depression involved with alcoholism, depression from other drugs, psychotic and manic depressive disorders. Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant. It is hypothesized that its effect is as a result of its activity at the synapses of adrenergic receptors, leading to the decrease in take up of norepinephrine into the nerve terminals. Depressed patients should be closely monitored and prescriptions should be written for the smallest amount of drug as this patients are constantly at risk of suicide until improvements have been made.
It may be necessary to add tranquilizers to the treatment plan or reduce the dosage of patients who show signs of increased psychosis or manic symptoms.
Sinequan should be used cautiously with the elderly patients.
