Differin XP is the brand name of a topical gel that contains 0.3% adapalene as its active ingredient. Adapalene belongs to a class of drugs known as retinoids and has skin renewal properties like vitamin A. This medication is indicated for treatment of acne vulgaris, otherwise known as severe acne, on the face, chest, and back in adults and children older than 9 years of age. It helps to decrease the severity of acne and also helps to accelerate the healing process.
The active ingredient in this medication is adapalene. Adapalene is thought to work by unblocking blocked oil glands in the skin. It also affects cell growth and has mild anti-inflammatory properties.
This medication may also be used for other conditions not mentioned above.
Always use your medication exactly as instructed by the doctor. The dosage given by the doctor may differ from the ones indicated here. Please do not try and alter your dosage in order to change treatment outcome without consulting with the doctor. There are many factors considered by the doctor when determining the dosage for your specific case such as the patient profile (age, body weight, other medication and other medical conditions), the size of the area being treated, the condition being treated, and response to treatment.
This gel is meant to be applied to the affected area as required, usually once daily at night or as otherwise directed by your doctor. Please follow your doctor’s instructions and if you are unsure, read your information leaflet.
Wash the area with a non-medicated cleanser and pat dry. Apply a small amount of the gel (pea sized) thinly and rub gently until completely absorbed. Make sure you clean and dry the skin before applying the cream. Wash your hands immediately after applying the gel.
During the first weeks of treatment, the acne may appear to be getting worse. This is only because the gel is working subcutaneously on the pimples. These effects should wear off eventually. If they persist, you should contact your doctor. It may take up to 4 to 8 weeks in some cases before the results become evident.
Do not use more than the recommended dose. In order to get the best results out of this treatment, the gel must be applied regularly.
This medication may exhibit side effects. If the effects are adverse and cannot be handled or tolerated, you should immediately report to your doctor or pharmacist. Some of the side effects include, but are not limited to:
If any of the above persist after 2 to 4 weeks of use, you should stop using the gel and inform your doctor. The doctor may need to prescribe another medication or adjust the dose to suit you.
