Zymar 0.3% Ophthalmic Solution contains the generic medicinal ingredient called gatifloxacin. Zymar is used to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, otherwise known as pinkeye, in adults and children one year of age and older.
Doctors prescribe Zymar to cure bacterial conjunctivitis, which is an infection of the membrane that covers the outside of the eyeballs and the inside of the eyelids.
Zymar belongs to a class of antibiotics called fluoroquinolones. Zymar works by killing certain bacteria that cause the infection.
Zymar is instilled into the affected eye(s) for seven days. The usual dose of Zymar on the first two days is one drop every two hours in the affected eye(s) while awake, up to eight times daily. On days three to seven, instill one drop four times daily while awake. It is important to space out the doses evenly throughout the day.
These may not be all the side effects of Zymar 0.3% Ophthalmic Solution.
Do not use this medication if you have ever had an allergic reaction to gatifloxacin or any medicine in the group of antibiotics known as the “quinolones”. Zymar should not be used for children under the age of one year.
Before taking Zymar, let your doctor know if you wear contact lenses or if you are using any other eye drops.
Store Zymar between 15°C to 25°C. Protect from freezing.
Also known as pinkeye, bacterial conjunctivitis is an infection of the thin membrane that lines the eyeball and the inner eyelid. The most common types of bacteria that cause bacterial conjunctivitis include Staphylococcus aureus, Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bacterial conjunctivitis usually produces a thick eye discharge or pus and can affect one or both eyes. Other symptoms include swelling, itching, burning and redness. Bacterial conjunctivitis is highly contagious. If your child has bacterial conjunctivitis, keep him or her away from school or day care until the symptoms have been resolved. Try not to touch or rub the infected eye(s) and wash any discharge from your eyes with a fresh cotton ball and then discard. Wash your hands often and do not wear contact lenses until the infection is cured.
