What Flexeril® Is and How It Works

Flexeril® (cyclobenzaprine) is a skeletal muscle relaxant used short term for acute, painful muscle spasms. It works on the brainstem to reduce tonic somatic motor activity. This lowers muscle hyperactivity and helps relieve pain and improves mobility. Tablets are commonly available in 5 mg and 10 mg strengths. Many adults receive Flexeril 10 mg when symptoms are more severe, within the maximum recommended daily dose.

YouDrugstore is a licensed Canadian pharmacy headquartered in Manitoba; prescriptions are reviewed by licensed pharmacists before dispensing. We also partner with licensed, vetted international pharmacies to offer authentic brand medications alongside a wide selection of generics at affordable prices.

Cyclobenzaprine is taken by mouth. It is not an opioid and does not treat nerve pain directly. It is most effective as part of a short-term plan that can include rest, stretching, and physical therapy. Use is generally limited to 2 or 3 weeks for a single episode of spasms, as longer use has not shown added benefit.

Flexeril® can cause drowsiness. Many people find evening doses help with sleep disturbed by muscle pain. A prescriber may adjust the dose based on symptom relief and tolerability.

Dosage and Usage

  • Typical adult starting dose: 5 mg by mouth three times daily.
  • If needed and tolerated, the dose may increase to 7.5–10 mg three times daily.
  • Maximum recommended dose: 30 mg per day in divided doses.
  • Use for short periods only (usually 2–3 weeks) for acute muscle spasms.
  • Take with or without food. Swallow tablets whole with water.
  • If drowsiness is prominent, the prescriber may direct a lower daytime dose or a larger bedtime dose.
  • Missed dose: take when remembered unless it is close to the next dose. Do not double doses.
  • Do not use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI.
  • Avoid alcohol and cannabis due to additive sedation.
  • Until you know how it affects you, avoid driving or using machinery.
  • Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F). Short excursions 15–30°C (59–86°F) are acceptable.
  • Keep tablets dry and in the original child-resistant bottle with the label.
  • Protect from moisture and excessive heat. Do not store in a bathroom.
  • For travel, carry your medication and prescription in your hand luggage.
  • Use a daily pill organizer if cleared for your household, and keep out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not use tablets that are damaged, discolored, or past the expiry date.

Benefits and Savings

Flexeril® helps reduce painful muscle spasms from strains, sprains, and acute back or neck pain. It helps muscles relax, eases stiffness, and can improve sleep disrupted by pain. Relief often starts after the first few doses, and daily function can improve as spasms settle. The short treatment window limits exposure to side effects while targeting the acute phase.

You can choose brand or generic cyclobenzaprine in strengths that fit the plan your prescriber sets. Generic Flexeril 10 mg tablets are popular for cost-conscious patients, and many achieve the same clinical effect as brand. You may see 60–80% savings versus typical US pharmacy prices when ordering from Canada. Multi-month supplies, when prescribed, can lower the per-month cost, and reorder reminders help you avoid gaps in therapy.

Side Effects and Safety

  • Drowsiness or fatigue
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Nausea, constipation, or stomach discomfort
  • Blurred vision
  • Confusion, especially in older adults

Serious effects are uncommon. Seek urgent care for fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, chest pain, severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing), severe constipation or urinary retention, or signs of serotonin syndrome such as agitation, sweating, fever, and muscle rigidity (risk increases with certain antidepressants). Avoid cyclobenzaprine if you have recent MI, arrhythmias, heart block, heart failure, hyperthyroidism, narrow-angle glaucoma, or urinary retention. Do not use with MAOIs or within 14 days of stopping an MAOI. Use caution with hepatic impairment and in older adults due to increased sensitivity.

Onset Time

Many people feel sedation and some muscle relaxation within hours of the first dose. Pain and spasm relief often begin within the first day and build over several days as consistent dosing continues. Sleep may improve within the first few nights. Most benefit for an acute episode is seen in the first 1–2 weeks, aligning with the recommended short course.

Compare With Alternatives

Methocarbamol is another centrally acting muscle relaxant with a lower risk of anticholinergic effects. It may cause less dry mouth but can still cause dizziness and drowsiness. See our listing for Robaxin® if your prescriber recommends methocarbamol instead of cyclobenzaprine.

Tizanidine is an alpha-2 agonist that reduces spasticity and spasms. It can cause low blood pressure and more pronounced sedation. It is often reserved for people who do not tolerate or respond to cyclobenzaprine.

Generic cyclobenzaprine offers the same active ingredient as Flexeril® at a lower cost. If your prescription allows substitution, consider Cyclobenzaprine to reduce out-of-pocket costs while maintaining efficacy.

Combination Therapy

  • Non-prescription analgesics: acetaminophen or NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen) may be used based on your prescriber’s guidance.
  • Topical options: diclofenac gel or lidocaine patches for localized pain.
  • Physical measures: gentle stretching, heat or ice, and physical therapy to restore function.
  • Caution with other sedatives: opioids, benzodiazepines, sleep aids, or alcohol can increase drowsiness.
  • Dose adjustments: prescribers may lower sedating co-medications to reduce additive CNS depression.

Patient Suitability and Cost-Saving Tips

Adults with acute, painful musculoskeletal spasms often benefit from a short course of cyclobenzaprine. It is not intended for chronic use. Effectiveness and safety are not established in children and adolescents; many guidelines avoid use under age 15. Older adults are more prone to confusion and falls and may require lower doses or alternatives.

Avoid cyclobenzaprine if you have cardiac arrhythmias, heart block, recent myocardial infarction, heart failure, hyperthyroidism, narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or severe liver disease. Do not combine with MAOIs. Discuss potential interactions if you take SSRIs, SNRIs, TCAs, tramadol, or other serotonergic drugs. During pregnancy or breastfeeding, decisions are individualized by the prescriber after weighing risks and benefits.

Ways to reduce costs include choosing generic cyclobenzaprine when allowed, selecting the lowest effective strength, and filling a multi-month supply if your prescription specifies it. Pricing varies by strength and quantity, so checking the flexeril price across package sizes can help you find value. Turn on reorder reminders in your account so you do not run out during recovery. You can manage your order online or by phone during office hours, and US shipping is available.
