What is Accuretic (Quinapril)?

Accuretic is the trade name of a prescription drug containing a combination of quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide as the active component. Quinapril belongs to a class of heart medications called ACE inhibitors, while hydrochlorothiazide belongs to a group of water pills called thiazide diuretic. They are used in combination in the management of hypertension (high blood pressure) and with other medications as an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of congestive heart failure. Accuretic is manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in different strengths of Accuretic 10mg/12.5mg, 20mg/12.5mg and 20/25mg. It is available in a pack size of 90 tablets.

Active ingredients

Quinapril HCl and hydrochlorothiazide are the active components of Accuretic. They work in combination to lower high blood pressure and also in congestive heart failure (when the heart can no longer pump blood properly). Quinapril works by stopping the activity of ACE, a chemical in the body, which acts as a precursor for producing other chemicals that causes the blood pressure to go up. Hydrochlorothiazide works on the kidneys to increase the excretion of sodium chloride (salt) from the body leading to low pressure.

Dosage information for Accuretic

Use your medication as directed by your healthcare professional. If you are not sure of how to, please check with your doctor. It is recommended to take your daily dose at the same time every day.

For high blood pressure (hypertension)

• The recommended starting dose is 10mg to 80mg a day for quinapril and 12.5mg to 50mg of hydrochlorothiazide.

The doctor may be required to prescribe doses that differ from the above dosages, do not change your dose or take the medication contrary to the doctor’s directions.

Contraindications

• The use of Accuretic is contraindicated indicated in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
• The use of Accuretic is contraindicated in patients who have been diagnosed with renovascular hypertension (high blood pressure that affects the kidneys blood vessels).
• Use of Accuretic is contraindicated if you are currently using any medications that contain aliskiren and you are diagnosed with diabetes, kidney disease, high levels of potassium, or congestive heart failure combined with hypotension.

Precautions

Always remember to inform your doctor of any allergies or medical conditions you may have, medications you are currently taking, if you are breastfeeding or pregnant, and any other important health conditions you might have.

Do not take Accuretic without consulting a doctor if you:

• Are less than 18 years old;
• Are planning to become pregnant or already pregnant;
• Are allergic to quinapril or any of the medications in the formulation;
• Are using any anti-cancer medications;
• Are diagnosed with a liver, kidney disease, and diabetes;
• Do not use if you have had stroke or any heart attacks.

Taking Accuretic with certain drugs can either potentiate their effects in the body or nullify them.
