Uses of Trileptal Oral Suspension

Trileptal is an an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic medicine. It works by decreasing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain.

Trileptal is used either alone or with other medicines to treat partial seizures.

Trileptal is used as a single medicine in adults and children who are at least 4 years old. It is used with other medicines in adults and children who are at least 2 years old.

Precautions and Warnings

Before taking oxcarbazepine, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to carbamazepine or eslicarbazepine; or to other anti-seizure medications (such as fosphenytoin, phenobarbital, phenytoin, primidone); or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Talk to your pharmacist for more details.

Before using this medication, tell your doctor or pharmacist your medical history, especially of: kidney disease, mineral imbalance (low level of sodium in the blood).

This drug may make you dizzy or drowsy. Alcohol or marijuana (cannabis) can make you more dizzy or drowsy. Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs alertness until you can do it safely. Limit alcoholic beverages. Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis).

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products).

Younger children may be more sensitive to the side effects of this drug, especially infections.

uring pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. It may harm an unborn baby. However, since untreated seizures are a serious condition that can harm both a pregnant woman and her unborn baby, do not stop taking this medication unless directed by your doctor. If you are planning pregnancy, become pregnant, or think you may be pregnant, discuss with your doctor right away the benefits and risks of using this medication during pregnancy. Since hormonal birth control may not work if taken with this medication (see also Drug Interactions section), discuss reliable forms of birth control with your doctor.

This medication passes into breast milk but is unlikely to harm a nursing infant. Consult your doctor before breastfeeding.

Dosage

Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) oral suspension is typically prescribed to treat epilepsy and seizures. The dosage depends on the patient’s age, weight, and medical condition. However, general guidelines are as follows:

For children (ages 2–16):

  • Initial dose: 10–20 mg/kg/day, divided into two doses.
  • Titration: The dose may be increased by 10–20 mg/kg/day every 3–5 days, based on the child’s tolerance and response.
  • Usual maintenance dose: 24–30 mg/kg/day, divided into two doses.

For adults:

  • Initial dose: 300 mg per day (divided into two doses).
  • Titration: The dose may be increased by 300 mg per day every 3–5 days.
  • Usual maintenance dose: 600–1200 mg per day, divided into two doses.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Dizziness or drowsiness
  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Double vision or blurred vision
  • Tremors
  • Ataxia (lack of coordination)
  • Abdominal pain

Serious Side Effects:

  • Allergic reactions – such as skin rash, itching, or swelling of the face, lips, or throat (which could be a sign of a severe reaction like Stevens-Johnson syndrome).
  • Low sodium levels (hyponatremia) – symptoms include confusion, weakness, dizziness, or seizures.
  • Mood changes or mental health issues – including depression, anxiety, aggression, or suicidal thoughts.
  • Severe dizziness, fainting, or a feeling of being lightheaded
  • Unusual thoughts or behaviors, such as confusion or memory problems
  • Liver problems – signs of liver dysfunction include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or stomach pain.
