Salofalk contains the active component 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA or mesalamine) which is part of a group of medications known as anti-inflammatories.
This medication is prescribed for patients who have ulcerative proctitis, which is also known as inflamed rectum. Salofalk may also be prescribed as additional treatment for people who suffer from ulcerative colitis in the large bowel and rectum.
The ulceration and inflammation which is associated with ulcerative proctitis is subdued by Salofalk. It appears that this medication suppresses the development of prostaglandins, which in turn reduces the inflammatory response.
A box of Salofalk contains 30 suppositories. For the 1000mg strength, you insert the suppository rectally once per day at bedtime. Try to keep it inside the rectum for as long as possible, preferably one to three hours or more. Treatment is continued daily until the symptoms are considerably improved, and then a gradual decrease in dosing is recommended.
If you are allergic to this medication, stop taking it and contact your doctor. Signs of an allergic reaction are rash, fever and dizziness. Other side effects may occur, including:

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an umbrella term used for a group of conditions involving chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract. When the inflammation is limited to the rectum, it is called ulcerative proctitis. This disease causes sores and ulcers in the rectum, which is the last six inches of the large intestine. Symptoms vary but may include diarrhea, bleeding, mucus discharge, pain, and/or accidental bowel leakage. Some patients experience discomfort from these symptoms on an ongoing basis but for others, the symptoms may disappear and reappear. Open discussion with your doctor to monitor your condition and dosing of medication is recommended.
Although there is no cure for ulcerative proctitis, the symptoms and flareups can be managed with medication such as Salofalk.
