Anafranil is the trade name of a prescription drug containing clomipramine hydrochloride (clomipramine) as the active component. Clomipramine belongs to group of drug called dibenzazepine and it is a tricyclic antidepressant used to treat obsession, phobias (irrational fears) and depression, it is also sometimes used in the treatment of muscular weakness associated with sleepiness. The drug is manufactured by Mallinckrodt LLC and was first approved by the FDA in 1989.
Anafranil is believed to work by interfering with serotonin’s (chemical in the brain) reuptake inhibition in the brain.
The actual mechanism of how clomipramine functions in treating depression, OCD and phobias is unknown. However it is thought to function by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin (a chemical in the brain) hence stabilizing the patients.
There are a few generic brands for the oral tablets of Anafranil. The generics are very much effective as the originator. Generic medications include Clomipramine.
